How to get there - Carnforth is on the A6 trunk road. Leave the M6 at junction 35

Get a map with driving directions to start (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - Small parking area off A6 adjacent to canal at Thwaite End Bridge. For those with SatNav a nearby postcode is LA5 9EF.

Alternative parking and launch site is available adjacent to the canal in the town centre.

General Description - An easy 9 mile journey on a lock free stretch of canal. Skirting the town of Carnforth the route passes under the M6 before meandering through pretty countryside with great views towards the Cumbrian hills. The end of navigation at Tewitfield has a picnic site but can be noisy from the nearby M6 which is met again.

Paddled today from bridge 130 at Kelley Lane, there is some off road parking with space to load and unload comfortably. Water level was quite low to the bank height and the ground is prone to being muddy but once in all that is forgotten. Beautiful paddle up to Tewitfield.

Just an idea, from looking at the map it looks as though the old part of the canal is navigable beyond the m6 - not for canalboats but for canoers. This may make an interesting trip

An alternative may be to start at Tewitfield, where there is ample parking, but a small carry to the water, and an adjacent pub/restaurant for some refreshment before setting off home. Sorry the name of the pub escapes me for now.
