Canoe Days Out

Leicestershire - Ashby Canal - Higham on the Hill to Sutton Cheney

This page was submitted by Keith Day (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - The suggested start is northwest of Hinkley. From Junction 1 on the M69 take the A5 (Watling Street) north-west for 4 miles and turn right into Nuneaton Lane. Follow this for 1 mile to the junction with Main Street where you turn right. Follow this through the village and at the roundabout take the first exit into Stoke Lane. Continue round the right hand bend then turn right into Basin Bridge Lane. Go over the canal and park on the right. For those with SatNav the postcode is CV13 6JJ.

If you want to make this a one way trip you will need to leave a car at Sutton Cheney Wharf Wharf Lane, Sutton Cheney, Nuneaton, Leicestershire, CV13 0AL.

Get a map with driving directions to start or end (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - Launch over the bank.

General Description - This can be either a lock and portage free three and a quarter mile one way trip or a six and a half mile return trip through the Leicestershire countryside. It is very rural. Your destination (or suggested turn round point) is Sutton Cheney Wharf where there is a cafe/bar for those so inclined.

If you're interested a walk of a mile up the footpath on the north of the canal will take you to Bosworth Heritage Centre the site of the Battle of Bosworth Field.

I have no photos of this trip so if you take some I'd appreciate it if you let me add them here as a photo album.
