Sussex - Chichester Canal - Chichester to Donnington (& return)

This page was submitted by Keith Day
How to get there - From the A27 Chichester By-pas take A286 Stockbridge Road towards the town centre and turn right into Basin Road. The entrance to the basin and car parking is on the right.

Get a map with driving directions to start (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - Launch anywhere into the canal from the basin car park.

For those with SatNav the postcode is PO19 8DT.

General Description - This canal is navigable for about two miles to the B2201 road bridge at Donnington. There is a pub & Restaurant (the Spotted Cow) at Hunston (one and a half miles from the start) There are plans to dredge and restore the canal to its junction with the Chichester Channel at Birdham but culverted road bridges represent a major obstacle.

An alternative launch point is from the pontoon at Hunston there is a small car park a short way along the road. We tend to use this as we've never yet found a parking space at the basin but it can also get busy. Fees are currently £6 per vessel for a day pass or annual for £30.

The Chichester canal is owned by Chichester District Council and leased to the Chichester Ship Canal Tust. You will require either a Day License for £2 or an Annual License of £15 to canoe this canal. Please see the trust's website.
