Canoe Days Out

Aberdeenshire - River Don - Monymusk to Inverurie

This page was submitted by Jim Thornton (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - From the B993 turn into, and drive straight through, Monymusk village. About half a mile outside the village to the north the road crosses the Don.

For those with SatNav a nearby postcode is AB51 7HL.

Get a map with driving directions to start or end (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - Launch from the left bank just downstream of the bridge.

General Description - Twelve miles of easy paddling with good flow and many small rapids. We saw otters on the first section.

There is a broken weir near Burnhervie which merits inspection. It is an easy portage left, but we shot it OK.

In Inverurie land left between the bypass (A96) bridge and the old road bridge.

Looking at completing this route. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.(1) How long did the route take you I am trying to arrange a pickup and need to have some idea how long I will be.(2) What time of the year did you tackle the route how much water was there Clearly it is very low at the moment. Do you think it will be OK at this time(3) Is there parking at the start of the route Anywhere I can leave a car if necessary I know the end of the route and St James Road id fine for parking.(4) I have an inflatable kayak which generally if fine in this time of water also very easy to portage if need be. Do you see any issues with an inflatable on the route.Any help would be much appreciated I am looking to do the route this week maybe tomorrow if I can get travel arrangements sorted today.Cheers, Andrew
