Canoe Days Out

Leicestershire - Ashby Canal - Snarestone to Shakerstone (& return)

This page was submitted by Jason & Jan (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - This route can be started from either direction. From the South, we suggest that you head up the M42 to Junction 11 and head for Measham. As you travel down the hill take the outside lane and turn right at the lights. Pass the Hanson brick factory on the left to the T junction. Turn right along the B4116 towards Snarestone (sat nav DE12 7DB) where you can turn left into Main Street and park opposite The Globe pub.

Get a map with driving directions to start or end (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - To gain access to the canal you will have to walk down a steep stepped path to the canal from the corner of the Globe car park. There is a tunnel to your right which we do not have access to. If your canoe or kayak is too heavy, or you fancy a shorter paddle then an alternative site could be at Gopsall Wharf which is a free car park next to the canal.

General Description - This is a relatively easy route through the Leicestershire countryside. It can either be a three mile one way trip (to Shakerstone moorings) or a six mile return trip. The route has no locks and is very sheltered in places. The route is very tranquil with just the noise of the wildlife and passing canal boats.

Shakerstone (CV13 6NR) is a perfect stop by the bridge. There is an excellent pub (The Rising Sun) to frequent and recharge the batteries. To get to that simply turn right over the bridge and walk into the village. Alternative refreshments could be perhaps had at the cafe by the start of the Bosworth Railway line.

Gopsall Wharf is a good place to gain access to the canal but be warned, there can sometimes be some very dodgy looking people about, especially if its getting close to dusk.
